Cookies & trackers

Detailed list of cookies and storage used by CipherChronicle, their purpose, retention period and how to manage your consent.

Our policy in short

CipherChronicle uses a minimal number of trackers, and only with your explicit consent. No advertising cookies, no retargeting, no sharing with ad networks. You can change your mind at any time via the “Manage cookies” button in the footer.

Technical local storage (always active)

These entries are stored in your browser's localStorage, never leave your device, and are accessible only from the cipherchronicle.com origin. They are not regarded as tracking cookies under the GDPR and do not require consent.

Key Purpose Retention
theme Light / dark / auto display preference. Persistent (until cleared by the user).
cipherchronicle:cookies Remembers your accept/reject choice for measurement cookies. Persistent.

Audience measurement (Google Analytics 4)

With your consent, we load Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: most-visited pages, most-tried cipher methods, traffic sources. The data is aggregated and is never used for advertising targeting.

  • Operator: Google Ireland Limited — Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland.
  • Cookies set: _ga (anonymous unique identifier), _ga_<CONTAINER_ID> (GA4 session state).
  • Retention: 13 months maximum.
  • Anonymisation: anonymize_ip is enabled on the GA side — the last octet of the IP address is truncated before any processing.
  • Without consent: no Google script is loaded, no cookie is set, no network request is sent to googletagmanager.com.

For more on how Google processes the data, see Google's Privacy Policy.

No third-party cookies, no advertising tracker

The site does not load Facebook Pixel, TikTok Pixel, LinkedIn Insight, any ad network, or any fingerprinting tool. The list above is exhaustive — should it change, this page will be updated before deployment.

Manage your consent

  • Initial banner: on your first visit, a banner at the bottom of the screen asks you to accept or reject. No measurement script is loaded until you respond.
  • Change your choice: use the “Manage cookies” button in the footer. The banner reappears and your decision is updated immediately.
  • Browser-level: you can also block or delete cookies via your browser settings (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.).

Your rights

Under EU Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) and the French Data Protection Act, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection and portability over your personal data. To exercise these rights, contact the publisher via the details in the legal notice.

You can also lodge a complaint with the French data-protection authority, CNIL.
