How it works

From photo to plaintext

Four steps, each one explained on screen.

Photo

Photograph the symbols, Breaker reads them

One photo is enough: Breaker spots each glyph and recognizes the alphabet among a hundred (dancing men, Zodiac, Pigpen, runes, Templars…). A misread glyph is fixed with one tap; with a known-key alphabet, the plaintext shows right away.

Analysis

Step-by-step analysis, explained

Letter frequencies compared with five languages, index of coincidence, likely key length, Kasiski test, telltale patterns: each step says what it found, in plain words.

Identify

Likely ciphers, as percentages

Breaker ranks the ciphers that may have produced the message, then lists the breaking methods it is about to try.

Crack

The message recovered, step by step

Over 35 breaking methods: Caesar, affine, Vigenère and its family, substitution, transpositions, Playfair, Hill, ADFGVX, Enigma… Follow the breaking live as the key and the text appear, ready to check.

Frequently asked questions

  • When will Cipher Breaker be available?

The app is being published on Google Play. This page will be updated as soon as it is out.

  • How is it different from the Cipher Chronicle app?

Cipher Chronicle encrypts your own messages (a keyboard that encrypts as you type). Cipher Breaker does the opposite: it starts from a message whose cipher and key you don’t know, and tries to crack it. Cipher Chronicle

  • Does Breaker crack every message?

No. A short message, or one encrypted with a modern method, may resist. Breaker then shows what the analysis revealed and the most likely ciphers, so you can carry on by hand.

  • Is there an iPhone version?

Not for now. The website’s decryption workshop works in any browser. Decrypt in the browser
